Gender, Diversities, and Technology

We work at the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, disability, culture, language, and sexual orientation, seeking to expand the understanding of how technology can support the development of democracy and promotion of human rights.

Building partnerships with members of diverse communities, organizations, and educational institutions, we facilitate the development of holistic and sustainable solutions to critical social challenges.

We seek to increase participation in and distributed ownership of the “new knowledge society” brought about by the Internet and other emerging technologies.

We offer . . .

Innovative on-line and on-site professional development that embodies equitable educational practices, builds the capacity of educators, and guides the development and facilitation of culturally appropriate on-line education.

Leadership and practical experience in creating effective digital libraries that integrate diversity with content to improve research, pedagogy, and practice (www.GSDL.org). This includes our role as a founding project of the National Science Digital Library and membership on its policy committee.

Research and resources for increasing the participation and success of girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

Gender-equitable resources, curriculum, and teaching tools for all levels in both formal and informal settings that help build gender-healthy education for males and females.

Selected projects

The Science of Learning Center Catalyst grant works with nationally recognized researchers to develop a cross-disciplinary center of study and practice focused on how sociocultural factors can integrate with learning technologies to better support learning.

Working with middle school youth and teachers, the Career Resources Education Network is developing a digital library that engages young people, especially those from currently under-represented groups, with the excitement of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics careers.

Gender Equity in Mathematics and Science (GEMS): Learning Online research expanded our understanding of how societal assumptions about identity, power, and interactions transfer to the virtual world, how to effectively teach highly emotional content online, how to support the success of diverse learners, and how the technology itself can influence success. Products include Equity in On-Line Professional Development and Making the Most of On-line Learning.

"The Gender and Science Digital Library is what I’ve been waiting for. Now I can send my students to one site, and they can find quality resources that they might not otherwise. It certainly helps them see the big picture."

—University professor, Canada

Through the Inter-American Forum and online discussion, we shared knowledge and experiences and gained a broad sense of what is possible . . . a shared vision, alliances, and a different kind of collaboration from which each o f us can benefit.
